In a televised address, President Ivan Duque also accused Venezuela's socialist leadership of providing safe haven to the rebels, underscoring the risks to regional stability from the rebels' shock announcement they would rearm.

But Rodrigo Londono, who had been the FARC's top military commander and now heads its legal political party, distanced himself from his former comrades, with whom relations have been strained in the past year.

He said FARC members would not target police and soldiers "respectful of the people's interests", but Colombia's "oligarchy", and would not kidnap civilians for ransom.

After ending a 50-year rebel war in their native Colombia in 2016, an ex-commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has threatened in a video message that the former guerrilla group will launch a new offensive.

Mr. Marin, widely known by his alias Ivan Marquez, attributed the death and violence to "the indifference and the indolence of the state".

"The actions of the Colombian government and the president's party in Congress have resulted in slow or non-existent implementation of many elements of the agreement".

Duque stressed out, then again, that the federal government stays dedicated to peace with FARC individuals who've participated within the reconciliation procedure and who've renounced all armed process.

All this, he said, "forced us to return to the field", Marquez said.

He understood their discontent and empathized, even though they spurned him. "I'm sorry for the crowd. Stan Wawrinka defeated Novak Djokovic by retirement when the Swiss was leading two sets to love.

"The ones making the announcements are those who have always been drug traffickers", Ramirez told journalists, adding that Interpol was expected to issue arrest warrants for them.

But the Farc officially condemned the move, saying on its Twitter feed that "more than 90 per cent of former guerillas remain committed to the peace process".

"We're not witnessing the birth of a new guerrilla army, but rather the criminal threats of a band of narco terrorists who have the protection and support of Nicolas Maduro's dictatorship", Mr Duque said. "The battle for peace does not stop", Santos tweeted.

Many are reportedly now based in Venezuela.

President Ivan Duque said he had authorized the military operation in rural areas of Colombia's south.

A peace accord signed by FARC and the Colombian government three years ago has come under pressure on various fronts, including the murder https://www.reuters.com/article/us-colombia-peace-feature/murder-of-hundreds-of-colombian-activists-casts-shadow-over-peace-process-idUSKCN1VF0IK of hundreds of former rebels and human rights activists, delays in funding for economic efforts by former combatants, and deep political polarization.

Londono said differences within the FARC create "a situation that enemies of the peace process can take advantage of". Making common cause with dissidents and the ELN will help force high-level cooperation between factions even though violent clashes between local elements over resources are likely to continue.
