Remains of man missing since 1997 found after resident’s Google Earth search

An eagle-eyed resident of Lake Worth, Fla., made the awesome find on August 28, when he was looking at some satellite images of his neighborhood on the mapping program and noticed a vehicle submerged in a lake near his home, the Florida Sun Sentinel reported Thursday.

A previous resident of a neighborhood in Wellington, Florida, was searching around on Google Earth when they noticed something in the water, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Police confirmed his findings and said the vehicle was heavily calcified and appeared to have been under water for a very long time.

"I called the former owner of my house and asked if she knew about this", Fay told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The police launched a missing person investigation, but the case went cold, with no new evidence emerging to aid in locating Moldt.

The remains of William Moldt, who went missing in 1997 at the age of 40, were found by complete chance and curiosity, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Barbera said the medical examiner's office positively identified the remains.

Submerged in the corner of a retention pond in Wellington, Florida, rested a auto that was heavily calcified and clearly had been in the water for a long time. It was only after a shift in water levels, which occurred after the case went cold, that the vehicle became visible.

"All we know is that he went missing off the face of the Earth, and now he's been discovered".

Ms Barbera said it was a neighbour who reported the sunken auto and was not aware of reports that Google Maps had been used.

William Earl Moldt's vehicle, which disappeared with the 40-year-old man in 1997, was discovered in this 2007 Google Maps image.

Moldt had called his girlfriend from the bar at around 9:30pm to say he would be home soon. While he was apparently not a frequent drinker, he did have several drinks in the club on the night of his disappearance.

Despite Mr Moldt only being found last month, the satellite image which lead to his discovery has been online since 2007.
