Karachi has been named among the 10 least liveable cities in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) - the research and analysis division of the Economist Group - in The Global Liveability Index 2019 published on Wednesday.

Melbourne came in second this year, with Sydney close behind at third - which is an improvement on the harbour city's rank of fifth last year.

Melbourne placed second for the second year in a row.

It poured cold water on Sydney's prospects of overtaking Melbourne, however.

Vienna is known for its cultural events and handsome architecture, but it topped the Economist Intelligence Unit's list due to its nearly ideal scores for stability, culture and environment, education and infrastructure, and health care.

The cities within the top ten remain unchanged from our previous update, but there has been some movement in their ranking.

However, French city Paris, dropped six places to 25th due to the anti-government "yellow vest" protests - images of which went around the world.

The top 10 also include Osaka, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Tokyo, Copenhagen and Adelaide.

What's the ranking based on?

The new Henley Passport Index is out, and there has been a major shuffle in the global ranking of the world's passports. In the beginning of 2019, 27 countries were in the top 10 positions on the index, but this month 4 more countries were added to the list.Several countries climbed the list to have most powerful passports, while few slipped from their positions, including India. The ranking is determined on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.

The survey looked at stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The WA capital achieved a maximum score of 100 for "Healthcare", "Education" and "Infrastructure" and a 95 for "Stability".

London and New York City ranked 48th and 58th respectively as they continue to struggle under the perceptions of the risk of terrorism and crime.

The culture and environment scores were reduced for many cities in poorer countries that are among the most exposed to the effects of climate change, including New Delhi and Cairo for their poor air quality.

This year, Karachi has been ranked 136th on the list - the fifth least liveable city in the world - only managing to fare better than Damascus in Syria, Lagos in Nigeria, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Tripoli in Libya.
