No Swiss woman has won a Grand Slam singles title since Martina Hingis captured the 1999 Australian Open, but Belinda Bencic hopes to end that two-decade drought at the US Open.

Svitolina will have another chance Thursday to reach her first Grand Slam final, and she believes lessons learned from past failures have prepared her to take the next step.

Monfils, her boyfriend who is the No. 13 seed on the men's side, sat in the stands, clad in a bright yellow shirt and gym shorts.

Monfils was stoic throughout Svitolina's match - quite opposite his flamboyant, high-energy style of play. "For me, it gave me lots of confidence", Svitolina said.

"Semi-final feels great right now", she said. The closest were Stan Wawrinka and Donna Vekic, who both qualified for the tournament in 2018.

Matteo Berrettini became just the second Italian man to progress to the US Open quarter-finals, 42 years after Corrado Barazzutti's run to the last four in NY. He lost to Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. "I definitely think that I have fought really hard to get to this point, so I think I do deserve to be here and hopefully I can go all the way". She will know that she has to move Williams around the court, work her laterally because is where the Williams' weakness is.

It is the furthest Andreescu has gone in a major. She's one of those players that does everything really well.

"She always looked at (those matches) like an opportunity and she was never on her heels from it", Bruneau said. "So it's not easy to play against her". "She's just wired this way". However, statistically speaking, her last couple of defeats in the US Open have come at the hands of fairly young opponents like Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova.

I said Wigan needed a more experienced rugby league coach than me, and I was right - they are now doing well. Me and Lammy are still close friends and message each other after matches.

After watching Serena Williams play like it is nothing in the Flushing Meadows through the years, it hardly comes as a surprise to see her reach the semifinal once again.

Andreescu, meanwhile, will also enter the top 10 after coming from behind to beat Belgium's Elise Mertens in the quarter-finals.

Andreescu has already won titles at Indian Wells and Toronto this season, and is 42-4 overall. She's a good runner, gets the ball back, not a lot of mistakes.

The Canadian hopes to become the fourth first-time Slam champion in five years to win the US Open women's title. Mentally I'm handling the pressure points better.

Svitolina and Konta exchanged three straight breaks of serve in the second set, before Svitolina ended that streak by holding for a 5-3 lead when Konta dumped a volley into the net.

Konta hears talk about that word too often, including from her own coach.

Konta disagrees with that notion entirely - both from a practical and philosophical perspective.

"I'm really happy, but the tournament's not done yet". "I find those words to be quite hollow. Physically I'm feeling great and more importantly I'm having fun every time I come out here". Williams was so dialed in, there weren't all that many occasions to test her ankle, but on those rare instances when she did need to run, she appeared to be more than OK.
