Small Plane Crashes Near Resort In Philippines

Deadly light aircraft crashes are not unusual in the Philippines, where small planes are used to hop between the archipelago's numerous islands.

Philippine media reported the names of the victims, including New Zealanders Tom Carr and his wife Erma.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it's providing consular assistance to the families of two people who died in the crash, but would not confirm their identity for privacy reasons.

A New Zealand couple were apparently onboard the medical evacuation flight that crashed in the Philippines.

Provincial police chief Eleazar Matta says the light plane crashed in a swimming pool resort in Pansol village in Laguna province.

The number of people killed this year has already reached 142, surpassing the 140 people who were killed of all last year. Gerke said he those killed were aged 15 to 57, and that he would not be naming the gunman yet.

Ten people were killed in March 2018 when a plane went down after take off in Plaridel town, which is near Manila, and killed those on the aircraft and four more on the ground.

The aircraft had come from the Dipolog Airport in Zamboanga del Norte and lost radar contact at around 3:10 pm while flying 25 nautical miles from Manila.

There were eight people on board the plane, including two pilots, a doctor, three nurses, a patient and one other person, Apolonio and Matta said.

Firefighters and an ambulance can be seen near the scene of the crash as local officials asked villagers to step back to a safe distance.

The area where the plane crashed is home to numerous resorts that are packed with visitors during the hottest months.
