Tesla claims one track record, plans to go for another

The Model S seen here at a facility near the Nurburgring certainly isn't a standard-issue road-going model, its most prominent additions being the wheel arch extensions to accommodate the wider wheel and tyre combination for more grip. That said, Tesla-and Elon Musk in particular-really need to stop making random promises with the latest concerning a supposed Nurburgring Record Lap.

So, there it is then.

There's also the matter of preparing the vehicle used for the attempt and getting it ready for a fast lap, with Elon Musk revealing on Twitter that Tesla has to "review & tune Model S thoroughly for safety on Nürburgring, especially Flugplatz session". Well, the reply mentioned above was part of a tweet from Tesla's head honcho in which he announced the Model S has set a new record for the fastest four-door auto at Laguna Seca.

Last week, he said that Tesla would bring a Model S to Nürburgring race track - right after Porsche established a new 4-door electric auto record at the track.

At first it was believed that Musk was challenging the Porsche Taycan's record-setting lap at the gruelling track, however confirmation from the track organisers indicated that Tesla had in fact booked in to take part in the annual Industry Pool laps where vehicles are but through their paces to test and tweak developments.

Musk didn't explicitly say Tesla was trying to beat the Porsche's record, but that seemed to be the implication. Given the length of the track, it presents a much greater challenge than Laguna Seca, especially for high-performance electric cars, which are prone to overheating and power loss.
