Tesla Driver Falls Asleep On Busy Highway

A driver on the Massachusetts Turnpike Sunday saw one of his fellow motorists turn the passing lane into the passed-out lane as a Tesla drove down the road with two sleeping people in the front seat.

While Massachusetts police said there was no law against falling asleep behind the wheel of a self-driving auto, Tesla does not consider its autopilot-equipped vehicles to be "self-driving".

Mr Randall told CBS he tried to wake the driver with his horn but to no avail. But that hasn't stopped other motorists from falling asleep behind the wheel.

Tesla says it doesn't consider its cars with the autopilot feature to be self-driving in its current form.

Dakota Randall was driving along the Massachusetts Turnpike on Sunday afternoon local time when he noticed the driver appearing to sleep in the vehicle next to him.

"Some guy literally asleep at the wheel", Randall wrote on Twitter, where he posted this footage.

He singled out increasing national service opportunities for young people as one area he'll target. Schultz also cited several recent back surgeries that have hampered his ability to travel.

Video footage uploaded to Twitter by eyewitness Dakota Randall appeared to show the driver with his head pointed fully downwards. "Teslas are sick, I guess?" he tweeted.

Tesla introduced its autopilot feature in 2014. "But yeah, the vehicle stayed the same speed in the same way on the highway, and yeah, it didn't change at all". State police say they are aware of the video.

Tesla, which is overseen by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, says its autopilot mode is an "assistance system" that is not meant to take over all driving responsibilities.

"Our driver-monitoring system repeatedly reminds drivers to remain engaged and prohibits the use of Autopilot when warnings are ignored".

A Tesla spokeswoman declined to comment on the video.
