Congressional Democrats vow to prioritize gun legislation

Behind the scenes, Senate Democrats and Republicans have engaged in a series of talks with senior White House staff about a package of gun measures that could form the basis of legislation.

"Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate, you know, they want to abdicate their responsibility here and just point to the president", Van Hollen alleged later in the interview. Committee Democrats say they expect the bills to reach the House floor in the next few weeks. The bill would still need to be voted on by the full House to advance and the GOP controlled Senate has not said what if any gun control legislation it would take up.

Votes on that bill and other gun control measures failed in April, 2013.

Asked specifically about the bill in question, which would require background checks for firearm purchases at gun shows and over the internet, Trump said there are "a lot of things under discussion", including some things that will never happen and other things that might. He later walked back those statements after meetings with officials representing the National Rifle Association. Democrats are now working in a coordinated way between the House and the Senate to pressure McConnell to allow a vote on gun reform bills already approved by the House. Meanwhile, all sides are waiting on the White House and clear guidance from Trump on what he might support.

"The president has very clearly attempted to usurp the power of the purse", Schumer continued.

Team USA upset with Greece’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thanasis Antetokounmpo
With the USA missing Jayson Tatum (ankle) and with Marcus Smart (quad) questionable, their defensive options have been limited. But a win Monday would give the USA the group win and some added momentum before entering the knockout stage.

Congressional Democrats have called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to hold a Senate vote on expanded background check legislation that previously passed the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

Republicans argue that the bills would do nothing to make the country safer and would infringe on constitutional rights.

David Catron, an American Spectator writer, after comparing the cost of building the barrier with the savings from health care system provided to illegal immigrants, came to agree with Andrew Sullivan who wrote "If We Want to End the Border Crisis, It's Time to Give Trump His Wall".

Over the past two decades, mass shootings have become a growing problem nationwide. "Today, we will consider three more measures that would help prevent the tragic gun violence that has engulfed this nation in recent years". The U.S. had seen at least 295 mass shootings in 2019 as of September 11, meaning there have been more mass shootings than days in the year thus far, according to data compiled by the non-profit Gun Violence Archive.
