Twins Break HR Record But Lose To Tigers 10-7 – WCCO

A day after connecting six times to set a single-season major league record with 268 home runs, the Twins got 12 hits - a double by Luis Arraez was their only extra-base hit.

But the Twins didn't just break the record.

Minnesota fell to 83-52 with Saturday's loss but lead the Indians by 4.5 games for first place in the AL Central.

"When these home runs start flying - and they've been flying since the very beginning - and there have been some games and weeks that are, they've been pretty special", supervisor Rocco Baldelli stated. That broke the mark established by the New York Yankees set last season. So let's put some faces and names to the numbers for some perspective.

The Minnesota Twins are starting to get hot at the right time as they've dominated their current road trip.

- The 1927 Yankees earned the nickname "Murderers' Row" for their fearsome lineup.

In Anaheim, California, Albert Pujols homered in a seven-run eighth inning, Mike Trout became the youngest player to reach at least 275 home runs and 200 stolen bases and Los Angeles rallied for a victory over Boston.

The Twins moved back in front with two out in the second on Kepler's team-leading 36th homer.

- How about the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, the "Big Red Machine" that won a second straight World Series that year, with sluggers including Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, George Foster and Joe Morgan.

The Twins have now hit 268 home runs this season, crushing the record the New York Yankees set only previous year.

Jordy Mercer's solo homer off Sam Dyson pulled the Tigers within three runs in the seventh.

Boston's J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to eight games with two hits along with two RBIs. Based on the power numbers, Hrbek would bat ninth for the 2019 Twins.

Garver had led off the game with a home run and after the Tigers tied it in the bottom of the first Kepler belted another home run off Tigers left-hander Matt Boyd. Granted, those Dodgers were a notoriously light-hitting team, and last in the majors in home runs that year.
