U.S. wants Brexit that encourages stability in Ireland - Vice President Pence

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier speaks during a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the World War II, in Wielun on September 1, 2019.

Pence said he had spoken with Duda about the importance of judicial independence, but did not offer any direct criticism of Poland's record. "And I ask forgiveness", Mr Steinmeier said, speaking in German and Polish at a ceremony in Wielun, where the first German bombs fell, on Sunday.

Few places saw death and destruction on the scale of Poland.

"None fought with more valour, determination, and righteous fury than the Poles", Mr Pence told the gathering of leaders, which included German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

Vice President Mike Pence and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki signed the deal in Warsaw, where Pence is filling in for President Donald Trump, who scrapped his trip at the last minute because of Hurricane Dorian.

Us vice president Mike Pence arriving at Okecie Airport this morning as he prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of the Second World War with delegations from up to 40 other countries in Poland's capital Warsaw. "The connections with Doonbeg in Co Clare which extraordinarily is also now such a strong connection with the President and also your family connections with Tubbercurry in Sligo are a reminder for us in Ireland the power of Irish America and the relationship between the two countries, clearly there is a difference in scale between Ireland and the USA but our histories are entwined in a way that is powerful and a way that affected many families".

The U.S. administration has agreed to increase its military presence on Polish soil, because of nervousness in Warsaw following Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

Greg Taylor: Celtic agree fee with Kilmarnock for transfer
Elsewhere, it is understood that Celtic are interested in signing Jeremie Frimpong from Manchester City on a permanent deal. He made 43 appearances and scored 6 goals for Rangers last season and was one of their best players.

The conflict began in the early hours of 1 September 1939, when a Nazi battleship attacked a garrison of Polish soldiers at Westerplatte. He called on his nation's western neighbor and biggest trading partner to take "responsibility" for the economic costs of its invasion and occupation.

Mr Steinmeier asked the country to forgive Germany, as he and other world leaders are in Poland to commemorate the beginning of the six-year conflict.

"We have to remember the victims and we have to demand compensation", Morawiecki said.

Estimates suggest the damage caused to Britain by the end of World War II was £120billion - which would equal to £3,620billion - or £3.6trillion - today.

Pence also said Washington was nearing a decision on including Poland in the country's visa waiver programme, adding it was a "matter of weeks".

That figure includes the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust, half of them Polish. "But one can not deny the fact that it was the Soviet Union, which defeated Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy from the annihilation", Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement. Polish president Andrzej Duda made a speech with Germany's president Walter Steinmeier.
