The report, published Monday by CNN, cited multiple Trump administration officials with direct knowledge of the spy's removal.

The exfiltration took place sometime after an Oval Office meeting in May 2017, when President Trump revealed highly classified counterterrorism information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador, said the current and former officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive operation.

CNN is reporting the additional information about the covert source who was extracted from Russian Federation in 2017.

Reporting by CNN and the New York Times said the source was outside the inner circle of Russian leader President Putin but had regular access to Mr Putin and was even able to photograph documents on the leader's desk.

A USA official said before the secret operation there was media speculation about the existence of such a covert source, and such coverage or public speculation poses risks to the safety of anyone a foreign government suspects may be involved.

In October 2016, the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a joint statement that intelligence agencies were "confident that the Russian Government directed" the hacking campaign.

USA officials had been concerned that Russian sources could be at risk of exposure as early as the fall of 2016, when the Obama administration first confirmed that Russia had stolen and publicly disclosed emails from the Democratic National Committee and the account of Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta.

The spy was one of the most important officials working for the USA during Russia's campaign to tamper with the 2016 presidential election, the New York Times reported. The US intelligence community considers Russian Federation one of the two greatest threats to US national security, along with China.

The former spy is now living in the Washington, DC, area under protection from the United States government, according to NBC.

Moreover, CNN and MSNBC have hired a number of former intelligence officials, whose fingerprints have been all over 'Russiagate, ' as anti-Trump pundits. Details of the extraction itself remain secret and the whereabouts of the asset today are unknown to CNN.
