Volkswagen unveils the ID.3, its new mass-market electric vehicle

The adjacent videos are showing not only the regular ID.3, but also the upscale limited-run launch edition for which VW has already received 30,000 preorders. It's only the ninth logo for the Volkswagen brand, and its simple, flat lines are quite different from the stylised, 3D-like logo it replaces. Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess has stressed the importance of reviving VW's weak market value to help bolster the company's case for acquisitions and partnerships.

Marking the official start of VW's hoped-for redemption, the carmaker is intent on doing it right. Compare that to Porsche's first electric vehicle revealed last week: the Taycan Turbo starts at $150,000.

The ID.3 will be available with three battery sizes - 45kWh for a range of 330km, 58kWh for 420km range and flagship 77kWh for 550km under Europe's WLTP test regime. The ID3 is the first vehicle worldwide with a carbon-neutral footprint to the customer.

"The ID.3 is an all-rounder that is suitable for everyday use", says Silke Bagschik, head of sales and marketing for a planned ID family. "It combines exciting design with innovative technology and significant range".

The ID.3, part of a new look for the company, was finally revealed to be a hatchback plug-in auto similar in size to the VW Golf and the first of several different types of electric vehicles (think a minivan, sedan, bus, and even a dune buggy) with the same electric base that can be built on the electric framework.

The ID.3 1st Plus will add a rear-view camera system, adaptive cruise control and keyless access. "The natural style and absolutely intuitive user experience demonstrate a new, electric way of thinking". The $30k, 45 kWh base model will boast 205 miles of range, while a 58 kWh version bumps battery life up to 261 miles.

Charging rates will vary, but all models will support fast 100 kW charging which VW says will provide 290 km (180 mi) of range within 30 minutes of plugin time.

Now, however, potential buyers will get their first look at the production version and learn a lot more about what it has to offer, starting with the "scalable" electric drive system that, the automaker claims, will offer as much as 550 kilometers, or almost miles, of range, depending upon which of the optional battery packs a customer chooses.

Even though the ID.3 is just 3mm longer and 10mm wider than the Golf, the longer wheelbase has liberated extra space in the cabin, making the ID.3 the new benchmark in spaciousness in the small-car class.

The ID.3 is driven by a 150kW permanent magnet motor at the rear. The ID.3 additionally utilises for App Connect for smartphone integration. Forming part of the exterior equipment list are tinted windows, silver highlights, 19-inch alloy wheels matrix LED headlights, and LED side lights, brake lights, turn indicators and tail-lights.

Top-of-the-range Max adds an augmented reality (AR) head-up display, Beats sound system, sliding/tilting glass roof, 20ins alloys, lane keep assist, contactless high-voltage battery charging and comfort seats. 1 Edition models will be offered with the mid-level 58kWh battery pack only and will feature a navigation system, a DAB+ digital radio, seat heating and steering wheel heating, armrests at the front, a Mode 2 charging cable and 18-inch light-alloy wheels as standard.
