Police said 21 people had been arrested as of Monday morning.

In Sydney about 30 people were arrested by police, including some elderly demonstrators and school-age children.

Activists, including one donning funeral attire, were mopping up phony blood just before noon as cops looked on in front of 26 Broadway.

Demonstrators playing steel drums marched through central London on Monday as they kicked off two weeks of activities created to disrupt the city.

The country's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said last week that names and photos of Extinction Rebellion protesters should be widely distributed to "shame" them.

Gumn, of Bristol, took umbrage at Johnson's characterization of climate change activists as "hippies".

"And I'm doing everything I can to help those three demands of Extinction Rebellion - the total truth, to commit to zero carbon emissions by 2025 and do what's necessary, and set up a people's assembly and determine how we achieve that".

On Monday, activists with the movement stopped traffic in European cities and smeared themselves and emblems of Wall Street in fake blood and lay in NY streets.

Two protesters were arrested after trying to enter the offices of Seven West Media - which houses The West Australian.

Hundreds of Extinction Rebellion activists have been arrested as protests take place across the globe.

Thousands of demonstrators brought Westminster to a standstill, as groups of activists blocked the roads surrounding Parliament and Whitehall.

"And started a conversation", said Ariana Planiden, who is also studying geography at UVic.

But he said the police had taken away items which the protesters had taken to the campaign, including gazebos, oat milk and art equipment, although they have since been replaced with donations from other groups.

Authorities were called to the scene shortly before 6am, where they found the protestor dangling above the Brisbane River.

Labelling Extinction Rebellion activists as "uncooperative crusties", the PM called on them to abandon their "hemp-smelling bivouacs" to allow the capital to function smoothly again.

Some 60 events were planned around the world on Monday and in Germany they were keen to kick off proceedings early.

Founded in Britain past year, Extinction Rebellion, also known as XR, now has chapters in some 50 countries.
