It is the main supply route in and out of Syria for the 1,000 USA troops deployed there, as well as for much of the limited aid that reaches northeastern Syria.

He wants to keep at bay the SDF - seen in Ankara as "terrorists" linked with Kurdish insurgents in Turkey - as well as resettling some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees now in Turkey.

Turkey's Ministry of Defense issued a statement late Friday night denying that its forces fired on USA troops and said instead that its forces were attacked from a position a thousand meters away from the U.S. post.

The resident, who gave his name as Maher, said that some people were fleeing on foot "to get away from the bombing".

Kurdish fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are battling Turkish forces and their Syrian proxies - mostly former rebels paid and equipped by Ankara - in various parts of the northeast.

Ankara says the aim of its assault in Syria is to defeat the Kurdish YPG militia, which it sees as linked to militant Kurdish separatists in Turkey.

Trump went on to question why the USA should protect part of Syria when President Bashar Assad is "our enemy".

It followed a deal announced Sunday between Damascus and the Kurds that saw government troops raise the Syrian flag in the flashpoint northern city of Manbij on Tuesday after USA forces withdrew.

The al-Mayadeen TV reported that the Syrian army would enter the city of Manbij in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo in northern Syria as well as the city of Ayn al-Arab in the northern Aleppo countryside within 48 hours.

A Syrian Kurdish official and a war monitor also said that Syrian government forces were poised to enter Kurdish-controlled towns, from which USA troops are withdrawing amid the Turkish offensive.

He said US troops who are working with Kurdish-led forces to guard the oil fields are still in place. The Kurds have set up an autonomous administration in territory they control, while Assad aims to impose the rule of his government across all Syrian territory.

But, with some European Union states urging caution so as not to inflame already tense ties with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg look unlikely to agree tough concrete actions.

A senior Kurdish official, Redur Khalil, said Monday his forces are complying with the agreement and are preparing to complete the withdrawal.

The action also has the potential for causing humanitarian and civilian distress, the MEA said in a statement.

The withdrawal could take weeks, he said, and troops around the town of Kobani on the border with Turkey are the first leaving. A Reuters cameraman in the town of Suruc reported occasional howitzer fire.

The EU last week issued a statement in the name of all 28 member states to condemn the offensive, warning it risked unleashing a humanitarian disaster and could undermine the fight against the militant Islamic State group.

The pull-back of troops from the region dovetails with President Donald Trump's long-standing desire for the United States to extract itself from foreign conflicts.

Turkey's offensive has displaced some 300,000 people and led to 120 casualties among civilians and 470 among SDF fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday.

Then, his team was the only provider of frontline medical care to injured Islamic State women and their children. Some, however, including the Kurds, saw this as a "betrayal" of groups that had helped the USA fight Daesh*.
