Ireland 47 - 5 Samoa: Ireland overcome red card to make quarter finals

Joe Schmidt's men will play Samoa in Fukuoka this morning (11.45am United Kingdom time) knowing a bonus-point win seals their spot in the quarter-finals regardless of whether Typhoon Hagibis wipes out the other deciding game in Pool A but the state of the pitch at the Hakatanomori Stadium has provided a huge talking point.

If Japan manage to get one losing bonus point - either by losing by seven points or fewer, or scoring four tries - and Scotland don't get one, then Japan will finish runners up behind Ireland and will face the All Blacks in the quarters.

Regardless of whether or not the Japan v Scotland game goes ahead on Sunday, Ireland will not have to wait long to find out if their opponents will be South Africa or New Zealand - should they deal with the Samoan challenge.

The build up to this game was dominated by talk of the weather, but it was Ireland who made a storming start with Best, Furlong and Sexton putting them in the box seat with three tries in the opening 20 minutes.

Fukuoka - Samoa appealed to the Rugby World Cup's judiciary not to suspend Ireland centre Bundee Aki after he was sent off for a risky tackle in their final pool match on Saturday.

Scotland could yet get knocked out of the group stage without playing its last game, if the typhoon approaching Japan forces its Pool A encounter against host Japan on Sunday to be called off.

Andrew Conway came off the bench to pounce on replacement fly-half Joey Carbery's grubber kick and scored the seventh try and his third of the tournament.

Backrower Jack Lam scored Samoa's only try, although both teams had a second-half try ruled out by TMO.

Captain Rory Best found Iain Henderson with a lineout throw close to the Samoan line and then got himself on the end of a rolling maul the underdogs couldn't cope with. It was awarded after one of several video reviews.

Samoa suffered a setback with Seilala Lam sin-binned for a high tackle on Jacob Stockdale but Ireland doubled their tally in the ninth minute with Tadhg Furlong crossing the whitewash that was improved by Sexton.

Ireland have tried hard to detach themselves from the uncertainty caused by Typhoon Hagibis, especially when it became clear early in the week that the Kyushu region, where their match will take place, is likely to be spared. The former Munster man stressed South Africa suited Ireland much more than New Zealand do.

Fullback Jordan Larmour, who was a threat each time he ran with the ball, created the gap which gave Sexton his first try. He tipped the ball back for Seuteni and Aki hared after it.

Seuteni was taken off for a Head Injury Assessment and did not return to the field of play.

After that, Ireland kept attacking and Samoa played nearly the entire second half camped in its own half.

Ireland's forwards maintained the pressure and Samoa soon had a second man sent off, with TJ Ioane drawing yellow near the hour-mark for a ruck infringement.

Bundee Aki of Ireland is consoled by Ed Fidow of Samoa as he walks off the pitch after receiving a red card.

There were concerns over Sexton's fitness after he was replaced at half-time in the victory over Russian Federation, having missed the defeat to Japan with a thigh injury.
