J&K govt. to lift advisory issued for tourists from October 10

India welcomes tourists back to Kashmir amid protests

This will be implemented on October 10, it said.

But local governor Satya Pal Malik said in a statement after a security meeting that the "Home Department's advisory asking tourists to leave the valley be lifted" from Thursday.

Kashmir - which touts itself "Paradise on Earth" and is famed for its snow-capped mountains, Dal Lake, temples, and mosques - saw more than 340,000 tourists and pilgrims abruptly leaving on August 2 after the Indian government issued the travel advisory.

The decision was taken at a meeting held to review the security situation in Kashmir.

In Monday's meeting the Governor was briefed about the October 24 BDC elections.

Women-only spacewalk rescheduled after smaller spacesuit arrives
On Oct. 21, NASA astronauts Koch and Jessica Meir will don two medium-sized spacesuits for one of five power-upgrade spacewalks. It is too far for the 58-foot (17-meter) robot arm to reach, forcing astronauts to lug the batteries back and forth themselves.

Though the world community has mostly backed India on the issue of Kashmir and the government's decision to abrogate Article 370 to strip the state of its special status, there is growing impatience with regard to the prolonged security curbs in the state.

Authorities in early August called for holiday-makers to leave "immediately" over "terror threats" to a major Hindu pilgrimage, sending thousands scrambling for places on planes and buses.

The governor has been holding situation-cum-security review meetings daily for two hours generally from 6 to 8 pm since 5 August.

Asserting that the abrogation of Article 370 to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir's special status was it's "internal matter", India has defended imposition of restrictions in the Kashmir Valley on the grounds that they were put to prevent Pakistan from creating more mischief through proxies and terrorists. The results of these elections will be announced on the same day. The election monitoring officials have been provided with mobile phone facility to ensure smooth conduct of elections, said the spokesman.

The governor was also apprised of the progress in apple procurement which has crossed 850 tonnes and worth Rs 3.25 crores, he said, adding some changes in the rates of apple are being made which will be announced shortly.
