Mother stopped possible school massacre by turning in her own son

The woman asked that only her first name, Nicole, be used.

Despite being hailed a hero by local authorities, Nicole said she still feels "like I've done something wrong". "It's devastating. I know I did all I can do and that I made the right choice", she added.

The teen, in his journal, said he'd use guns and a variety of explosives to execute the attack on College Place High School, according to police records obtained by KTEL News.

The Washington state woman, who identified herself only as Nicole, told CBS News she made the hard decision to notify police in September after discovering her son's journal, in which he detailed a plan to attack College Place High School, where he was enrolled, on April 20, 2020. "Their lives would have been forever changed", Nicole said.

Police believe she did everything right.

College Place Police Chief Troy Tomaras told the outlet that he was "very grateful" for Nicole's actions, calling her decision to act after finding the journal "courageous".

The teen reportedly told his mother that the journal entries were simply creative writing, and not an actual plot.

As for the boy's reasoning, Tomaras said, "He's plotting to attack and kill people".

"That's beyond creative writing".

"She's very courageous, it's clearly very emotional for her".

The 17-year-old's mother claimed he'd been battling depression.

'It takes a lot to do what I did, ' Nicole added. He remains detained, and his mother says she believes he is safer in jail, telling CBS, "I'm anxious about his mental health, and he needs help". "Truth hurts sometimes", she said.

The alleged attack was planned for the 21st anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre, which left 12 students and one teacher dead before the perpetrators, a pair of seniors, committed suicide. They have been saved by possibly the toughest choice a mother can make.
