Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday (Oct 10) he would be ready to open a probe into any Ukrainian interference in the 2016 US presidential election but denied that US President Donald Trump had tried to blackmail him.

Even before the call, security officials were concerned about the removal of the United States ambassador to Ukraine in May, and also about efforts by Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani to spread conspiracies involving Ukraine and indications that Trump wanted Zelensky to offer up potentially damaging information about Biden, according to the newspaper.

Having been made aware of this by his defence minister later, he raised the issue during a separate meeting in September in Poland with Vice President Mike Pence. Trump's claims that Ukraine allied with the Democrats in a plot to derail his 2016 presidential campaign, though no evidence of such a plot has emerged.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says his country will "happily" investigate whether Ukrainians interfered in the 2016 US elections.

Zelensky told reporters Thursday in response to the White House's release of the phone's transcript.

"There was no blackmail. This was not the subject of our conversation", Mr Zelensky said about his call with Mr Trump.

He said he'd also support an investigation of alleged Ukrainian interference in favour of Hillary Clinton, Mr. Trump's opponent in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Zelenskiy said the US has not provided any details of such interference.

In an all-day "media marathon" held in a Kyiv food court, Zelenskiy played down suggestions that Trump pressured him in exchange for US military aid to help Ukraine battle Russian-backed separatists.

"I told him. please help to resolve it", Zelenskiy recalls.

The security officials - at least four of them - raised their concerns with National Security Council legal advisor John Eisenberg, the Post said, citing USA officials and other people familiar with the matter.

"The absence of any clear action by Eisenberg or others may have contributed to decisions by White House insiders to relay their concerns to a CIA employee who assembled the information they supplied into a whistleblower complaint that he submitted August 12 to the US intelligence community's inspector general", the Post explains.
