MA health officials are reporting the state's first death from a vaping-related lung injury.

Officials have yet to identify the cause for the outbreak, which dates back to March, and they are pursuing multiple lines of investigation.

A report by clinicians in North Carolina last month pointed to the inhalation of fatty substances from aerosolised oils, but a new study by the Mayo Clinic published this week found patients' lungs had been exposed to noxious fumes.

The state Department of Health said Monday it reported the death of a woman in her 60s from Hampshire County to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All patients have reported a history of using e-cigarette, or vaping, products.

Based on this recent data, CDC recommends people consider refraining from use of e-cigarette or vaping products, particularly those containing THC.

UAW And GM Negotiations Take A "Turn For The Worse"
GM ended production of the Chevy Cruze in Lordstown in March, and the Detroit-Hamtramck plant is set to close in January. It also led to layoffs at numerous 10,000 American suppliers that provide auto parts and other goods and services to GM.

As of October 1, the CDC reports there have been 18 deaths in 15 states involving lung injuries associated with vaping.

Approximately 80 percent of patients are under the age of 35 and most are male.

E-cigarettes have been available in the USA since 2006.

"The number of confirmed and probable cases of vaping-associated lung injury we're seeing continues to escalate and today I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of a patient who had this illness", Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said in a statement. The division said the individual was hospitalized, but has since been discharged.

Manufacturers sought to challenge the ban in a Boston court, arguing that the law was disproportionate to the health risks posed by the devices.

Public and political opinion appears to be hardening, however, with the administration of US President Donald Trump announcing in September that it would ban flavored e-cigarette products in the coming months.
