PG&E says it could cut power in 30 counties to prevent fires

Sempra Energy's San Diego Gas & Electric utility is considering its own shutoffs but hasn't decided.PG&E's service warning includes some of California's most populous areas, including Santa Clara County's nearly 2 million people and Alameda County's 1.7 million residents, according to state data.The blackout isn't expected to shut San Francisco's main rail service, the Bay Area Rapid Transit System.

Because of "strong and dry wind", Pacific Gas and Electric Company, or PG&E, may have to cut power from 30 California counties - including Alameda County - from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.

The California department of forestry and fire prevention said it had increased staffing in preparation for extreme fire weather and what was expected to be the strongest wind event so far this fire season. Get the full story in the video above.

Originally estimating Monday a total of 650,000 customers, PG&E said Tuesday that about 150,000 additional customers will be affected in parts of Humboldt, Kern, Marin and Trinity counties.

PG&E confirms that it will move forward with its Public Safety Power Shutoff starting tonight just after midnight.

PG&E officials said they anticipate that this weather event will last through midday Thursday.
