Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India Friday for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India Friday for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The Prime Minister also briefed Xi on the handlooms of Tamil Nadu. However, the Kashmir question was neither raised nor discussed by either side, according to a senior Indian government official.

Both the leaders had around five-and-half hours of one-to-one meeting spread over two days. That was one of the triggers for Modi proposing the informal summit with Xi - to build a one-on-one channel for unfettered communication at the highest level. They have also agreed to encourage mutual investments in identified sectors through the development of a Manufacturing Partnership and also announced a High-Level Economic and Trade Dialogue for this.

It mostly revolved around economic cooperation and struggle against extremism that plagues both India and China.

There was a good conversation on trade, which is an issue of concern in India.

Gokhale said China brought up the issue of finalising RCEP during the talks. "Refreshing walk and exercises in Mamallapuram, along the scenic coast", Modi tweeted.

"India-China relations are not predicated to a single issue", Gokhale said, adding that the latest developments in Kashmir were an internal matter of India.

China had extended an invitation to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to visit the country.

Today's meeting between Xi and Modi will take forward the spirit of the first day of the informal summit during which personal rapport between the two leaders becomes evident.

Referring to the first informal summit between the two countries at Wuhan previous year, Prime Minister Modi said it has brought in an "increased stability and fresh momentum in our relations".

Third, the two countries should effectively improve military and security exchanges and cooperation, Xi urged.

China, for its part, was expected to urge India to take an independent decision on telecom equipment maker Huawei's bid for India's proposed 3G network and not be swayed by U.S. pressure.

The Prime Minister further said, "We have decided that we would prudently manage our differences without letting them turn into disputes, that we would be sensitive to each other's' concerns and that our relations strive towards World Peace and stability". Modi chose not to respond, sources said. "Wuhan spirit infused new momentum and trust in our relations".

In pursuit of their efforts to further deepen economic cooperation and to enhance their closer development partnership, the two leaders have chose to establish a High-Level Economic and Trade Dialogue mechanism with the objective of achieving enhanced trade and commercial relations, as well as to better balance the trade between the two countries. President Xi presented a return gift. "Prime Minister listened", Gokhale said, but added no further details.

India's Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said the two leaders spent almost five hours discussing bilateral issues that have often been fraught. As countries that are large and diverse, they recognised the importance of continuing to make joint efforts to ensure that the worldwide community strengthens the framework against training, financing and supporting terrorist groups throughout the world and on a non-discriminatory basis.

India and China had agreed that "it is important to support and strengthen the rules-based multilateral trading system at a time when globally agreed trade practices and norms are being selectively questioned", the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a release.

Despite the summit's relaxed nature, the ambassador said it is expected to provide direction to officials on both sides so they can "address better the issues that we have been dealing with over a long period of time". A calendar of 70 events have been drawn up, which could include a ship voyage that will trace the historical connect between the two civilisations. We need to find ways in which we enhance exports and China can increase imports from India.

After the ends of talks which lasted around eight hours, Xi left Chennai for Kathmandu.

During Xi's trip from hotel to Mahabalipuram in the state of Tamil Nadu, people from all walks of life, including young students, lined the streets waving Chinese and Indian national flags, with young men and women in Indian traditional costumes singing and dancing, to welcome the Chinese president for his visit.
