India slams Turkey for its 'unilateral military offensive' in northeast Syria

The US President's astonishing remarks came as Turkey unleashed a series of airstrikes on Kurdish backed Syrian Defence Force (SDF) targets in northern Syria.

The ministry said Turkish jets and artillery had struck 181 targets east of the Euphrates River in Syria since the incursion started.

Turkey has angrily rejected worldwide criticism of its attack on a Kurdish militia in Syria, reporting progress by its forces on the second day of an operation that world powers fear could further destabilise a region in turmoil.

On the accusations of betraying the Kurdish fighters, Trump on Wednesday stated that he condemned the Turkish military operation and said: "In no way have we abandoned the Kurds".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called claims that the USA withdrawal of troops was a green light for the slaughter of the Kurds "false".

On Wednesday, the president of the European Union's executive branch, Jean-Claude Juncker, urged Turkey to show restraint and stop its military operation.

France, Germany, Britain, Belgium, and Poland have called for a closed-door UN Security Council meeting on Syria for October 10.

Mr Trump said at the time that the Kurds "fought with us" and "died with us", and insisted that America would never forget.

The Netherlands is in the US -led coalition against the IS terrorists in Syria.

"Let's be clear, it's the Turkish government that is taking action here to create an unstable situation", he said.

"The question that remains is how far can Turkey advance before global or regional actors, stop it", said Nick Heras, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security.

USA senators on October 9 announced a bipartisan bill was being drafted to sanction the heads of the Turkish political leadership, including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the country's military and energy industries.

In the United States, lawmakers continued to denounce the Turkish operation, calling on President Donald Trump to intervene against it.

Turkey says the incursion aims to protect its national security and prevent a "terror corridor" between Syrian and Turkish Kurdish militants.

He reiterated an earlier statement that Turkey could "open the gates" for an influx of Syrian migrants to Europe.

Youssef Hammoud, a spokesman for the SNA, told pro-opposition media in Syria that rebel fighters have been positioned for days near Syrian towns that the Turkish military intends to capture in its ongoing offensive.

The action also has the potential for causing humanitarian and civilian distress, the MEA said in a statement.

Syrian government allies Russian Federation and Iran both called for an end to the offensive.

Erdogan's communications director Fahrettin Altun said Turkey had no ambition in northeastern Syria except to neutralize the threat against Turkish citizens and to liberate the local people from what he called "the yoke of armed thugs".

They also would sanction anyone who conducted military transactions with Turkey or supported energy production for use by its armed forces, bar US military assistance to Turkey and require a report on Erdogan's net worth and assets.
