CNN anchor Chris Cuomo apologized Thursday night for joking about gender pronouns during a town hall he hosted on CNN focused on LGBTQ issues.

Asked by an audience member how she would respond to an "old fashioned" supporter who opposes marriage except between "one man and one woman", Warren quipped, "I'm going to assume it's a guy who said that".

She added, after some applause from the Los Angeles crowd: "Assuming you can find one".

The clip immediately drew posts on Twitter and other platforms, with some commentators pointing to the viral moment and others saying it could show a lack of attentiveness to socially conservative voters who hold sway in some battleground states.

Earlier Thursday, Warren released a plan for aimed at protecting and securing LGBTQ+ rights and equality.

The crowd broke into laughter and cheers as Warren shrugged her shoulders. "I apologize", Cuomo tweeted. "I think this is just a failure to understand how much trans and non-binary people struggle to have our authentic pronouns taken seriously", tweeted Charlotte Clymer, who does communications for the Human Rights Campaign.

"That was the basis of the faith that I grew up in", she said. "In the same CNN town hall, Elizabeth Warren touted her faith, opining that "hatred for people of faith can be shocking" but ALSO mocked religious traditional marriage supporters".

"To me, it's about what I learned in the church I grew up in".

The senator from MA then recited the first song she remembers singing: "They are yellow, black and white. Jesus loves all the children of the world, '" Warren addressed onstage after she was questioned about her own faith. "And it truly is about the preciousness of each and every life. I apologise. I am an ally of the LGBTQ community, and I am sorry because I am committed to helping us achieve equality".

Buttigieg is the first openly gay person to make a serious bid for the presidency.
