Several local candidates across the country made history. The changes were expected to cost $272 million over the 2019-2020 fiscal years.

He said that he has no issue with Bevin asking for a re-canvass, that any candidate in a close election has the right to "double check", but that Republicans need to accept the unwelcome result and move on after that.

"Any attempt by Gov. Bevin to undermine these results in the legislature is wrong and should be viewed as a direct attack on the democratic process", McGarvey said in a statement. Some polls show Trump's approval ratings have tanked in a state he lost by 0.4% in 2016.

As the sun was coming up this morning, the outcome of the Kentucky governor's race was still up in the air, but it wasn't looking good for Republican incumbent Matt Bevin.

But the race also showed the limits of the GOP's increasing dependence on the president.

Trump campaigned aggressively for the Republican gubernatorial candidates, flying to Tupelo, Mississippi, last Friday to campaign for Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, who won the governorship, and led a rally in Lexington, Kentucky, on Monday for Bevin.

Trump tried to rally Republicans via Twitter but stayed out of Virginia, a state he lost in 2016.

The result could reverberate far beyond Kentucky.

In Mississippi, Republican Tate Reeves emerged as the victor of the state governor's race by a comfortable margin against Jim Hood, an anti-abortion, pro-gun Democrat.

Trial of Trump crony Roger Stone promises political drama
Ahead of his trial, Stone is prohibited from speaking publicly about the case and is barred from using any form of social media. While Mueller's report did not find any collusion with Russian Federation , it did not exonerate the president's behavior.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Democrats have seized full control over the legislature, taking over both Virginia's Senate and the House of Delegates.

Republican Daniel Cameron was elected Kentucky's next attorney general Tuesday - the first African American to ever win a race for the office and the first Republican to do so in over 70 years.

"If you lose, it sends a really bad message", he said. 'If you win, they are going to make it like, "Ho hum".

"There is not a single socialist among them and they are probably horrified by the likes of Elizabeth Warren", Holmes added.

Both of Virginia's U.S. senators are also Democrats, as is a majority of the state's House of Representatives delegation (thanks to 2018 victories).

Virginia also drew several high-profile visits from 2020 presidential hopefuls, including former Vice President Joe Biden, as well as current Vice President Mike Pence. The fierce contest was being watched closely for early signs of how the increasingly partisan impeachment furor in Washington might affect Trump and other Republican incumbents in 2020. But the dip at the top of the ticket still offered another example in the Trump era of suburban voters' willingness to abandon established Republican loyalties - even with the president making a personal appeal on behalf of a GOP standard-bearer.

"In the long run that's a real problem for the Republican Party, because groups where we have gotten stronger are declining as a portion of the electorate", he said.

While Tuesday's results aren't necessarily predictive of what will happen next November, voters in multiple states tied their decisions to the national atmosphere, particularly the president.

Trump's not done campaigning this year.
