Carter abruptly left Fox this week

Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter is seen prior to the Camping World Kickoff between the Florida State Seminoles and the Mississippi Rebels at Camping World Stadium on September 5, 2016 in Orlando, Florida.

Long-time FOX Sports personality Cris Carter has split from Fox Sports.

The Big Lead reports that Carter "cleaned out his desk at Fox Sports under supervision of security", adding detail to sports media reporter John Ourand's reporting from earlier Thursday that included only a short statement from Fox confirming Carter's departure.

Carter had been a panelist on FS1's "First Things First", a morning debate show that he co-hosted with Nick Wright and Jenna Wolfe. "There is no further comment at this time", it read.

"I was told it was bad", one source told McCarthy. Carter had moved from HBO Sports' Inside to ESPN and then to Fox Sports, accruing many followers along the way.

Despite being listed as an "NFL analyst" on his network bio, Carter has been missing in action on Fox's Thursday Night Football coverage, as well as on the network's top-rated Fox NFL Sunday pregame show, with Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, Michael Strahan, Howie Long and Curt Menefee.

The New York Post's Andrew Marchand disputes that being the only reason.

FOX Sports announced Thursday morning that Carter was out.

It's unclear what this means for FOX's First Things First moving forward.

Cris Carter's stint with Fox Sports has come to a close.
