Netflix will stop working on some older Samsung TVs next month

Netflix will drop support for older Samsung smart TVs beginning December 1

Affected Netflix customers have been getting an error message that says 'Netflix will no longer be available on this device after December 1, 2019. This change doesn't affect only Samsung-branded TVs. Older Samsung smart TVs will no longer be able to connect to the latest updates or enhancements from Netflix.

The support page where Samsung made the announcement has since been taken down, but a cached version of the page is still visible.

"On December 2nd, Netflix will no longer be supported on a small number of older devices due to technical limitations", the Netflix representative told CNET. It doesn't go into detail as to why support is being dropped for some older devices, other than it being 'due to technical limitations'. All of these were released prior to 2012, so it is likely that Netflix views them as not worth supporting anymore. Plenty of Samsung smart TV owners probably already rely on a streaming stick or box of some nature, but those who don't will have to find another way to access the world's biggest streaming service. Samsung provided a link to Netflix's list of compatible devices, but this is, in fact, a tutorial page that doesn't mention much about device compatibility.

Samsung and Netflix both note that users will see a new pop-up alert on their devices notifying them of the upcoming compatibility change.

On its support website, Samsung explains that technical limitations are to blame for the loss of Netflix.

According to Roku, only the first two Roku models will lose Netflix support.

But if you're someone whose older Samsung smart TV does lose Netflix support on December 1, it's not totally necessary to go out and buy a new TV.

At this point, it doesn't seem like any Apple TV models are losing support for the streaming service.

Still, even media streaming dongles aren't immune to obsolescence. Roku confirmed to Digital Trends that the Roku 2050X, Roku 2100X, Roku 2000C, Roku HD Player, Roku SD Player, Roku XR Player, Roku XD Player are among those devices losing Netflix support.
