Don Cherry faces backlash after latest comments

The host of Rogers Hometown Hockey and Hockey Night in Canada's Coach's Corner segment, MacLean was somber while reflecting on the remarks made by his co-host, Don Cherry, regarding immigrants on Saturday night. MacLean looked like Sean Spicer when he was supporting Trump as his press secretary before becoming a contestant on Dancing With the Stars.

"I live in Mississauga, where nobody wears one", he said on Coach's Corner.

The 85-year-old said on his weekly segment as part of Hockey Night in Canada that he's less frequently seeing people wearing poppies anymore to honour fallen Canadian soldiers - and he singled out those he believes are immigrants in Toronto, prompting a swift online backlash.

Perhaps it is just convenient timing or maybe it is a subtle dig at the incident, but the official Canadian Forces in the U.S. account has shared a photo set that pays tribute to the honourable migrant soldiers who fought for Canada.

Just before playing his taped poppy appeal standing next to his great uncle Sgt. Thomas William Mackenzie's grave in France, Cherry said: "You people love, that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life".

He goes on to say "These guys [veterans] pay for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price".

"PS I bought my poppy" he added.

Sokolov was a senior member of the Russian Military-Historical Society headed by Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky. A court on Monday will decide whether to arrest the historian, who was being treated for hypothermia in a hospital.

The National Hockey League said in a statement that Cherry's remarks were "offensive and contrary to the values we believe in".

Hockey Night in Canada used to be a long-time CBC Saturday night staple.

I'm the son of Scottish immigrants - a first-generation Canadian - so I guess I qualify as a "good Canadian" in Cherry's old world of black-and-white TV. Sulemaan Ahmed is of Pakistani descent and knew exactly who Cherry's rant was targeted at - people who look like him.

Outrage was building online on Sunday with many on Twitter calling for Cherry to be fired.

Sportsnet began Sunday's broadcast ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs' contest against the Chicago Blackhawks with an apology from Ron MacLean in Welland, Ontario.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie called his comments "despicable". We're proud of diverse cultural heritage and we'll always stand up for it. "New immigrants enrich our country for the better".

Poppies are sold every year by The Royal Canadian Legion to raise money in support of veterans and their families. "We have spoken directly with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks", read the statement from Bart Yabsley, president of Sportsnet.
