Man shells out record-breaking $46K for meaty snow crab

Seafood lovers have been known to clamor for crab - and all-out mob scenes have erupted over clusters.

It's the highest-ever price paid for a snow crab, according to the Tottori prefecture's fishery promotion division, which was in charge of the auction. The costly creature, a male snow crab, was 14.6 centimeters (5.74 inches) wide and weighed 1.2 kilograms (2.7 pounds).

The winter delicacy went home with local crab seller Kanemasa Hamashita Shoten and will be sold to a restaurant located within the high-end shopping district of Ginza in Tokyo.

"I know it's extreme".

A "five shining star" snow crab was auctioned off in Tottori, Japan for a whopping 5 million yen ($46,000) on November 7. "But I am sure the taste of the crab matches the price".

Over the decades since, the two religious groups have gone to court many times over who should control the site. Hindus believe that the mosque was built under Mughal ruler Babur after destroying a Hindu temple.

In Japan, buyers often pay eye-watering sums to secure a seasonal first at auction, from tuna to melons, with media attention guaranteed. Traditionally, it is believed that the first winning bidder of the season will enjoy the most good fortune that year, which is why auctions start so high.

Hamashita said he thought he could get away with a winning bid of $3 million yen (about $36,300).

Last year, Kanemasa paid 2 million yen or $18,316 Dollars (in today's exchange rate) for an itsukiboshi snow crab that was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most ever paid for a crab.

"The crab this year beat the record price last year, so we believe this is probably the most expensive crab in the world", he said, adding the government will consider applying for Guinness certification again.

The catch was made off Tottori Prefecture after the fishing season began in the region after midnight Tuesday.
