It's been two days since gunmen ambushed a convoy of mothers and children in northern Mexico, killing three women and six of their children.

It ended not in celebration but in catastrophe.

The attack began on Monday afternoon on a highway running parallel to the USA border as the three women and 14 children were travelling from the La Mora ranch in Sonora to Janos, Chihuahua. Their bodies were burnt in their cars.

Meanwhile, another survivor of the attack, who goes by the name Lafe Langford Jr, shared a video of the burned-out fuselage of one of the cars on social media.

The children were on their own from about 1 pm, when the ambush began, until about 7.30 pm, when they were rescued. She is now back in La Mora together with her grandma.

Kendra Lee Miller, a relative of the victims, told NBC News that the dead included 29-year-old Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 43-year-old Dawna Langford, 11-year-old Trevor Langford, two-year-old Rogan Langford, 30-year-old Rhonita Miller, 12-year-old Howard Miller, 10-year-old Krystal Miller, eight-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana Miller.

Langford believes that the victims drove through the disputed region and were killed by one of the cartels.

Hours after Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 29, was gunned down, relatives discovered her infant daughter, Faith, unscathed and still strapped to her auto seat inside the bullet-ridden SUV.
