Apple celebrates the best apps and games of 2019

Apple revealed the list of the best apps and games of 2019 on the App Store last night.

On the iPhone, Spectre Camera was the best app of the year. "The 2019 App Store Best Apps and Games winners reflect our global desire for connection, creativity and fun", said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. In short, the app uses computer vision tech to auto-detect the kind of scene you're shooting, stabilize the frame, and capture a long exposure by stacking multiple frames together in the same way most long-exposure apps on smartphones operate.

Finally, Apple also revealed the winners for this year's design awards, with games accounting for five of the nine selected apps. Digital notebook sketching app Moleskine was crowned as the iPad App of the Year.

Even Apple TV apps get in on the act, with The Explorers chosen as Apple TV app of the year.

Apple Arcade: Sayonara Wildhearts - A wild, colourful rhythm-based puzzle game set in a world where cyberpunk motorcycle races meet astrological magic. Case in point: apps like Anchor, Unfold, Steller, which can be used to create podcasts, photo collages for Instagram Stories among other things.

Examples cited included Call of Duty Mobile, The Elder Scrolls: Blades, Gears Pop, Minecraft Earth, Dr Mario World and Mario Kart Tour.
