Former Notre Dame Running Back George Atkinson III Dead at 27

Multiple outlets have reported that former Notre Dame running back George Atkinson III has died at the age of 27. But the former Notre Dame product, whose father George Atkinson played for the Oakland Raiders, had been struggling with the suicide of his twin brother, Josh, who took his own life December 25, 2018, the South Bend Tribune said.

After a stellar college career, Atkinson III signed with the Oakland Raiders then found himself on several National Football League practice squads, making his lone National Football League regular season appearance during Cleveland's Week 17 finale against Pittsburgh in 2016.

George Atkinson III has sadly died.

The sources close to Josh have informed that Josh was reportedly depressed after his mother died suffering from complications of Crohn's disease and it is also known that she was also diagnosed with Schizophrenia.

Atkinson's twin brother Josh, also a former Notre Dame football player died unexpectedly a year ago.

In an open letter written in October, George opened up about his struggles in grieving his twin brother.

George said his brother felt guilty over their mom's death.

His family and his friends are mourning his death whereas no one has informed us about the exact cause of death. Following his brother's death by suicide on Christmas 2018, George wrote that he was institutionalized for self-harm. "That's the moment I can't describe", he wrote of losing his brother. "My mother's birthday just passed and I know the holidays this year won't be easy".

"In the a year ago, the Atkinson family have lost both Josh and George Atkinson", Notre Dame Recruiting tweeted.
