It is not the first time a scorpion has been found on a commercial flight.

A picture shared by U.S. news site TMZ shows a large scorpion in a United box.

A woman who was a passenger on a United Airlines flight en route to Atlanta says she was stung by a scorpion on the plane from San Francisco on Thursday morning.

She said that when she went to the lavatory, the stinging feeling increased - and then a live scorpion fell out of her pant leg and scuttled across the floor, until a flight attendant managed to trap it.

Once on the ground, the sick woman was treated by medical staff and taken to a local hospital.

A United Airlines spokesperson did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

Edible coffee cups trialled on worldwide flights
And earlier this week, the airline announced that it's trading some of its plastic coffee cups for edible versions instead. This isn't the only move Air New Zealand has made to go greener in the skies.

The United spokesperson added that the passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment and United Airlines has "been in contact with their customer to ensure her well-being".

Upon learning that the passenger had been stung by a scorpion, the flight crew immediately consulted with a MedLink doctor who told them what to do until the plane landed after its four and a half hour flight.

The woman said the scorpion fell off the leg of the trousers and "ran down the floor" of the plane, but the hostesses could finally catch it.

United did not respond to a request from SFGate for additional information.

A scorpion was responsible for the sting, TMZ reported - and included a photo of the offending arachnid. It was not clear what kind of scorpion it was, how it got to the plane and what happened to the creature after the plane landed.
