Speaking in response to recent Newspoll figures showing Prime Minister Scott Morrison's popularity had plunged in the wake of his response to the ongoing bushfire crisis, Mr Pitt said now was not the time for talk about polls.

The catastrophic bushfires have killed at least 26 people, destroyed more than 2,000 homes and scorched some 80,000 square kilometres - an area the size of the island of Ireland.

The poll was taken after Morrison announced a 2 billion Australian dollar ($1.4 billion) bushfire recovery fund and called out 3,000 army reservists to back up state emergency workers - responses that were viewed as too slow.

In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Morrison said that the "unprecedented" fire season has "created an environment where people for the first time I think, arguably, have wanted to see a more direct involvement of the federal government in responding to that natural disasters".

"Compared to previous weeks, [next week] is looking really good", New South Wales Rural Fire Service spokesperson Angela Burford told the Sydney Morning Herald Monday.

If these forecasts tend to be verified, it'll express "all our Christmas, birthday celebration, wedding, anniversary and graduation presents combined into one".

"This fire took a major run about seven or eight days ago, and with the weather changing now, the weather settling down, the fire has settled down", he said.

Opposition Environment and Water spokeswoman Terri Butler said the government had been forced to change its tune due to "furious public reaction" over its handling of climate change.

Meanwhile, German engineering company Siemens says it will review its involvement in an Australian coal mine after pressure from climate activists.

The money will go to threatened species, including koalas, and will also be used to restore damaged animal habitats.

Visiting the area, New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said there was a "small area of burning still to complete" but the "containment prognosis looks promising".

Dozens of various other fires have been completely brought in check.

He also repeatedly stated that Australia was doing more than enough to meet its emission reduction targets, prompting a series of large-scale street protests.

"It is with great sadness that we confirm that a. firefighter from Parks Victoria has been involved in an incident while working on a fire in the Omeo area resulting in a fatality", Forest Fire Management Victoria Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman said in a statement.

Smoke has drifted across the Pacific, affecting cities in South America, and may have reached the Antarctic, the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization said.
