Oscar Nominations 2020: Surprises, Snubs, and 'Joker' Leads the Pack

If the "snubs" and oversights feel a little more acute and arbitrary with the latest round of Oscar nominations, blame that in part on a year that produced an abundance of good movies, and few genuinely great ones. Issa Rae, who announced the nominees with John Cho, put it perfectly when she said, "Congratulations to those men". Not only is Joker up for best picture, but it's also been nominated for the achievement in directing, film editing, costume design, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, sound editing, and sound mixing awards.

There were some surprises. Beyonce ("Lion King") missed out on her first Oscar nomination, for best song.

It's been a tough awards season for Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.

Another Netflix movie, "Marriage Story", received six nominations - Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (Adam Driver), Actress in a Leading Role (Scarlett Johansson), Actress in a Supporting Role (Laura Dern), Original Screenplay (Noah Baumbach) and Original Score (Randy Newman).

Britain's Florence Pugh and Anthony Hopkins are in the running for best supporting actress and actor respectively.

Leading the pack is Joker, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards on Monday.

Martin Scorsese, up for best director for "The Irishman", is the most nominated living director with nine.

The nominees for best animated feature film: "How to Train a Dragon: The Hidden World"; "Toy Story 4"; "I Lost My Body"; "Klaus"; "Missing Link".

This year's nominees will for the second straight year go without a host.

Nominations are underway for the 2020 Oscars in Los Angeles, the 92nd edition of the awards which is due to take place on February 9. ABC will again broadcast the show, viewership for which previous year rose 12% to 29.6 million.
