While the all-male domination of the category might suggest to some that female directors did not have as many creative opportunities, women helmed several highly-acclaimed films over the a year ago, between Lulu Wang's The Farewell, Marielle Heller's A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Lorene Scafaria's Hustlers and Greta Gerwig's Little Women.

The announcement of five men and zero women in the Best Director category during the 2020 Oscar nominations drew some serious shade from the broadcast's host.

In addition to Gerwig, filmmaker Lulu Wang, the director of "The Farewell", had been considered to be a contender.

But she, and other female directors, were snubbed.

Only one woman has ever won the award in the Academy's 92-year history - Kathryn Bigelow in 2009 for The Hurt Locker.

Also nominated in the best supporting actress category are Scarlett Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell, Laura Dern for Marriage Story and Margot Robbie for Bombshell.

Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories - actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. Three women, however, scored nominations in the best first-time feature film director category.

The Oscars are coming, and the nominations will be announced Monday, with the likes of 1917 and Once Upon a Time.in Hollywood vying for best picture. "Little Women" was also nominated for best original score and best costume design. Gerwig did receive a nomination for best adapted screenplay.

But now she's in the running for the most prestigious accolade, as well as still being in with a chance to take home a Bafta for her role as Jo March in Greta Gerwig's adaption of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel. "She is the most brilliant creative talent working in our industry today, and we are thrilled that she and our handsome film have been recognized".
