Two US Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan Bomb Attack: NATO

Two American soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday when a Taliban roadside bomb ripped through an army vehicle, officials said. Miguel A. Villalon of Joliet, from IL. Two other soldiers were injured.

There have been more than 2,400 total deaths of U.S. service members since the start of America's longest war in 2001. The final approval required from their leader, Maulvi Hibatullah Akhundzada, was never announced.

The insurgents have said they will renounce Al-Qaeda, fight the Islamic State group and stop jihadists using Afghanistan as a safe haven.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for his death, with militant spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying that it targeted USA forces in the attack. Many Afghan civilians are killed in the crossfire or by street bombs planted by militants.

The four service members have not been identified. The U.S. military at the time said preliminary reports did not indicate it was caused by enemy fire, though the Taliban claimed to have shot down the helicopter - a claim the U.S military dismissed as false. Around 5,000 of them conduct counter-terrorism missions.

Most of the 20,000 worldwide troops now in Afghanistan are focused on training and advising Afghan security forces, with a smaller contingent taking part in a counterterrorism mission.
