Jay-Z sues Mississippi prison officials over unfair conditions- NBC News

The philanthropic branch of Jay-Z's company, Team Roc, along with attorney Alex Spiro have sued over nightmarish living conditions on behalf of 29 inmates yesterday.

"The unthinkable spate of deaths is the culmination of years of severe understaffing and neglect at Mississippi's prisons", the lawsuit reads.

In the past two weeks, five prisoners incarcerated in Mississippi "have died as a result of prison violence", notes the suit, filed against the outgoing Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Pelicia Hall and Mississippi State Penitentiary Superintendent Marshall Turner.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, the prisons are "chronically understaffed" and extremely underfunded.

The swimsuit seeks damages for the inmates, and an order forcing Mississippi's Dept. of Corrections to put out a plan to handle all the problems, particularly rising workers and cleansing up the sewage.

The special agent in charge of the FBI's Jackson division and Mississippi's two USA attorneys say people should report possible civil rights violations or criminal activity.

The lawsuit, filed today in federal court, said the maximum-security prison was extremely unsafe for prisoners after a surge of violence left three inmates stabbed to death, just inside first week of 2020.

"We can not treat people this way, and it's time to do something about it", Spiro told NBC News in a statement.

"We will not stop until this is fixed", Gotti told TMZ.

Parchman Farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, has been the subject of several in-person and online protests in the past month due to the recent deaths of at least five inmates in January alone.

"Roc Nation and its philanthropic arm, Team Roc, demand that MS take immediate steps to remedy this intolerable situation".
