Canada's Major Railway Carriers Suspend Passenger Traffic Nationwide Due to Pipeline Blockade

Stevenson gave an interview to CBC Daybreak North on Wednesday, but didn't respond to a request for comment from The Citizen.

"Olin is alarmed by the current freight rail situation in Canada, and we are concerned that customers and municipalities will not receive shipments of vital chemicals including chlorine within one week", chairman and CEO John Fischer said in a letter to federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau on Tuesday.

Via has also said a blockade near New Hazelton, B.C., means normal rail service is being interrupted between Prince Rupert and Prince George.

"We said that the situation is beyond our control and the safest thing for us to do - for all passengers - is to make sure they don't get stranded online in-train (by) canceling all service until further notice across the country".

Full refunds will be provided for all cancelled trips, which are being processed automatically.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce called on all levels of government and police to work together to bring an immediate end to the blockades and to restore all rail service.

Via Rail has suspended nearly all train service across the country "until further notice", while CN Rail announced a "progressive shutdown" of its operations in Eastern Canada as the disruption caused by anti-pipeline blockades intensified nationwide Thursday.

Protests in New Hazelton and Belleville began on February 6, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by CN Rail.

J.J. Ruest, president and chief executive officer at CN, stated, "It's not just passenger trains that are impacted by these blockades, it's all Canadian supply-chains". According to Via Rail, approximately 34,000 passengers will have been inconvenienced by the 223 trains that they have had to cancel.

The company also claims the blockades are also harming the country's reputation as a stable and viable supply chain partner.

Factories and mines will be soon faced with very hard decisions.

Despite the countrywide impact, he underscored that responsibility for enforcing court injunctions against the anti-pipeline protesters lies with provincial politicians and police.

Demonstrators set up blockades in British Columbia and Ontario in solidarity with opponents of the Coastal GasLink pipeline project that crosses the traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation in northwestern British Columbia. On Tuesday the RCMP completed their enforcement and reopened the Morice West Forest Service Road and Morice River Bridge, which had been barricaded by Wet'suwet'en supporters.

RCMP began enforcing an injunction last week that prevents interference with construction of a $6.6-billion natural gas pipeline in northern British Columbia.

Tensions over the project flared up in recent weeks after the company building the natural gas pipeline, TC Energy, obtained an injunction against any construction blockades from B.C.'s top court.

A protest in Saskatoon, at Idylwyld Drive and 22nd Street, is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m.

Vancouver commuters are bracing for more disruptions today as protesters supporting Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs promise further actions.
