California attorney Michael Avenatti claims his case was political payback for his clashes with Trump

Michael Avenatti has been convicted on all counts in his Nike extortion case.

On Friday, a jury in NY convicted the lawyer, who is best know for once representing Stormy Daniels, on all three counts; attempted extortion, honest services wire fraud and transmission of interstate communications with intent to extort.

Prosecutors said Avenatti, 48, threatened Nike with a press conference to publicise the payments and take several billion of dollars off its market value, unless it paid him and another lawyer up to US$25 million (S$35 million) to conduct an internal probe, and paid the coach US$1.5 million.

Afterward, he shook hands with his lawyers and told them "great job", before he was led back to the cell where he has been held since a judge found he had violated his bail conditions.

The verdict on Friday, following a two-week trial, could lead to a long prison sentence for the lawyer, who became a national figure by representing the pornographic-film actress Stormy Daniels in a suit against Trump.

According to evidence presented at trial, Mr. Avenatti told those people his client-who wasn't present at any of the meetings-had evidence that Nike employees had funneled secret payments to the families of top high-school basketball players, in apparent violation of NCAA rules.

The widespread travel ban may make it worse for New Zealand's economic growth, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern commented. Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr said monetary policy had time to adjust to the impact of coronavirus, if needed.

Avenatti was in "crushing debt" at the time and wanted to use Franklin's case to make money, prosecutors said.

In addition to the extortion trial, Avenatti also faces an April trial in NY on charges that he defrauded Daniels of book proceeds and a May trial in Los Angeles on charges that he defrauded clients and others of millions of dollars.

Avenatti gained prominence by making frequent cable television appearances in 2018 and 2019 as journalists courted him for information about Daniels, who sued Trump to void a nondisclosure agreement in which she was paid $130,000 by Trump's then-attorney Michael Cohen to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with the future president in 2006. All of Avenatti's claims were proven to be fabricated.

Avenatti's legal problems may only grow.

"That is what extortion sounds like", Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Podolsky said in closing arguments Wednesday.

Avenatti also stands accused of stealing $300,000 from former client Stormy Daniels, earned from her memoir "Full Disclosure", and also forging her signature.
