The total of confirmed infections across mainland China was now 66,492 after 2,641 new cases were confirmed, as of Friday, the National Health Commission said.

The number of new confirmed cases has been steadily falling outside Hubei, with 221 infections reported on Saturday. Egypt on Friday counted the first infection on the African continent.

The revision added almost 15,000 patients to Hubei's tally on Thursday, with the World Health Organization noting that cases going back weeks were retroactively counted.

"It is better to clinically diagnose and admit patients... than leaving room for doubt", Tong Zhaohui, vice president of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, said Thursday in Hubei. An increase in cases has been reported in Son Loi.

It also disclosed a statistical error, saying it removed 108 previous deaths in Hubei that had been double-counted.

The ruling Communist Party is seeking to fix public trust broken in 2002 and 2003 during the SARS epidemic, which the government covered up for months.

"In response to the shortcomings and deficiencies exposed by the epidemic, (the government) should work to strengthen areas of weakness and close up loopholes", Xi said.

The death toll from China's virus epidemic neared 1,400 on Friday, as the United States complained of a "lack of transparency" from Beijing over its handling of a crisis that has fuelled global panic.

"All those who have returned to Beijing should stay at home or submit to group observation for 14 days", Beijing's virus prevention working group said in a notice the newspaper cited. It did not elaborate on how the isolation will be enforced.

Xu Yahua, an official from China's transport ministry, said the government expects 160 million people to start returning to their cities of residence next week. At a press briefing in Wuhan on Saturday, the newly appointed head of Hubei's provincial health commission, Wang Hesheng, said they aimed to ensure that zero patients went without treatment.

More than half of the confirmed cases in Hubei have been treated using traditional Chinese medicine, Wang said.

The overall revenue growth rate at Alibaba will be negatively affected in the quarter ending this March, said Alibaba CEO Daniel Yong Zhang. The person, along with other evacuated USA citizens, arrived at an Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 7 aboard a State Department-chartered flight from China.

The mission, including worldwide experts, will also look at how and when more than 1,700 health workers contracted the virus.

A joint mission with China led by the World Health Organization will launch an investigation this weekend into the coronavirus.

Vietnam has imposed a 20-day quarantine on Son Loi, a rural community outside Hanoi where 11 of the country's 16 coronavirus cases are located, two local officials said. Those who have tested positive have been taken off the ship to hospital.

Yesterday, some of the passengers on the Diamond Princess were allowed to disembark - with priority for older passengers confined to windowless cabins - and complete their quarantine on shore.
