In a statement to Bloomberg, CEO of MWC organizer GSMA John Hoffman said that it would be "impossible" to hold the event due to "global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak".

Typically attended by more than 100,000 people, the late-February event has been the wireless industry's biggest trade show for more than three decades.

A a press conference in Barcelona earlier in the day, GSMA Director General Mats Granryd said that the organizers had not yet calculated the losses, adding that participants' health and the event's reputation were more important than the issue of money.

The affiliation mentioned, "Our sympathies are with those affected by the Corona virus at the moment in China and around the world". Huawei, ZTE, Nvidia, Intel, Amazon, Sony, MediaTek, Vivo, and others already confirmed they won't be coming to this year's MWC due to infection concerns.

He stated that while no mass gathering is ever risk-free - with the potential for food poisoning, injuries or building collapse - most events "can continue if the proper measures can be applied".

Other factors that will determine if the outbreak affects USA tech events are how well information is communicated about the virus and how false or misinformation is suppressed, he said.

Spanish labour unions said the show was called off due to the panic of the major technology companies.

GSMA says that they plan to host MWC 2021 again in Barcelona.

The outbreak also raised fears for the global economy overall, with Boeing saying yesterday that the virus was a drag on its first-quarter deliveries.
