Global CO2 emissions from power generation flatten out -IEA

Global energy-related CO2 emissions remained unchanged in 2019

Coal-fired power generation in advanced economies declined by almost 15% as a result of growth in renewables, coal-to-gas switching, a rise in nuclear power and weaker electricity demand.

Other scenarios included in AEO2020 demonstrate the sensitivity of US energy-related Carbon dioxide emissions projections to assumptions regarding variables such as economic activity, oil prices, renewable energy technology costs, and oil and natural gas resource estimates.

Other factors outside of the energy transition also contributed to the flatlining of emissions, though, meaning that a year ago could represent a blip in emissions growth, rather than a definitive peak, IEA chief economist Laszlo Varro argued in his analysis of the report.

In the European Union emissions decreased by 160 million tons, or 5%.

Emissions from burning coal in advanced economies declined by 370 million Mt (3.2%) a year ago as the electric power sector's emissions declined by 85%.

Global carbon dioxide emissions plateaued in 2019, defying expectations of a rise, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) data.

Coronavirus wipes out early-season LPGA golf swing in Asia
World No. 2 Park Sung-hyun won last year's edition of the HSBC Women's World Championship, held at Singapore's Sentosa Golf Club. Under the upgraded alert, event organisers are advised to cancel or defer non-essential large-scale events.

In the USA last year, recorded the most significant reductions in the size of the country at 140 million tons, or 2.9%.

"We now need to work hard to make sure that 2019 is remembered as a definitive peak in global emissions, not just another pause in growth", Birol said in a statement "We have the energy technologies to do this, and we have to make use of them all". "The IEA is building a grand coalition focused on reducing emissions - encompassing governments, companies, investors and everyone with a genuine commitment to tackling our climate challenge". To stay clear of 1.5 ˚C, which carries frightening risks of its own, we'd likely have to more than halve emissions by 2030.

In Japan, CO2 emissions fell by 45 million tons, or 4%, from the previous year, as the country moved to restart its nuclear reactors.

But emissions in the rest of the world increased by nearly 400 million tonnes in 2019, with almost 80 per cent of the growth coming from countries in Asia where coal-fired power generation continued to rise.

The data lays bare the rapidly declining importance of coal power in advanced economies, where the use of the carbon-intensive fossil fuel fell nearly 15 per cent past year.

The new data comes at a crucial time as Canadians are fighting over a gas pipeline export project in B.C., that is expected to help Asian countries switch from coal to natural gas. To reliably prevent global temperatures from rising 2 ˚C above preindustrial levels-hot enough to destroy the world's coral reefs, among other serious dangers-the world needs to slash emissions by 25% this decade and reach zero by 2070, according to the UN's climate panel.
