Oscars 2020 Red Carpet: Director Spike Lee pays tribute to Kobe Bryant, wears Lakers-colored tuxedo

This year, there were various tributes to Kobe throughout the night.

In 2018, Kobe Bryant accepted his first ever Oscar.

Spike Lee arriving at the 92nd Academy Awards. Two years later, the five-time National Basketball Association champion was honored at the 2020 Academy Awards on February 9, after passing away in a tragic helicopter crash alongside his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other victims just two weeks before the show.

Dressed in a purple and gold suit to honour Bryant's time playing for the L.A. Lakers, Lee's suit was also embellished with the number 24, an homage to the athlete's number on the court.

Later during the nighttime, a legged with lights, the Los Angeles Lakers' colors, appeared during Shakira's halftime show functionality and Jennifer Lopez on the area.

Former NFL wide receiver Matthew Cherry, who won an Oscar for short animated film, ended his acceptance speech with a nod to Bryant and dedicated his win to him. And then, of course, Kobe was honored in the In Memoriam segment, towards the end of the ceremony. He took home the golden statue for the short film "Dear Basketball'".

The animated short, narrated by Bryant and directed and animated by Glen Keane, focused on the letter Bryant wrote for The Players' Tribune in November 2015 in which he announced his retirement.

To many, Kobe Bryant was so much more than a basketball player. "I am talking about what we gotta squash for Vanessa, the family", he told Porter, seemingly referring to some of the negative headlines made following the death of the National Basketball Association legend.
