Russian satellites trailing USA spy satellite in orbit, Space Force says

A Russian satellite launched late a year ago, which later split into two, has been tracking a US spy satellite, the commander of the US Spaceforce has alleged. The Space Force is part of the Air Force, but it specializes in space warfare.

The Russian satellites' behavior "has the potential to create a unsafe situation in space", Time quoted Raymond as saying.

A top Space Force official has lashed out at Russian Federation for trailing a U.S. spy satellite with two spacecraft.

"These satellites have been actively maneuvering near a USA government satellite", Raymond said February 10 in an interview with SpaceNews. The situation, he warned, creates a potentially risky scenario between Cold War foes. "These activities don't reflect the behavior of responsible space fairing nations".

Raymond further added that these satellites have been behaving similar to another set of satellites that Russia deployed back in 2017 and which the Russian government characterized as "inspector satellites".

"This is all circumstantial evidence, but there are a hell of a lot of circumstances that make it look like a known Russian inspection satellite is now inspecting a known United States spy satellite", Thompson tweeted on January 30. Russian Federation reportedly launched a satellite into orbit last November and- while in orbit- it split into two separate satellites. Some analysts and satellite watchers have suggested the sub-satellite "inspector" was chasing US 245. By the middle of January, Kosmos 2542 and Kosmos 2543 had moved in orbit and were closing in on US 245. It was launched on November 26 and later released another satellite, the Kosmos 2543.

Russia's Foreign Ministry was working on its response to concerns voiced by the United States military earlier this week about the "disturbing" behavior of a pair of Russian spacecraft that flew near a USA government satellite.

Amateur satellite tracker Michael Thompson speculated on the peculiar movements of Cosmos 2542 and Cosmos 2543 on Twitter, using publicly available data.

Kosmos 2542 wasn't originally close to United States of America 245.

This is reportedly the first time that the US military has publicly revealed a threat from another country to one of its spacecraft.

The U.S. Space Force is watching two Russian satellites that appear to be observing a U.S. satellite at close range, Gen. John "Jay" Raymond said on Monday.

The Space Force, which was only established on December 20, 2019, will have approximately 16,000 personnel.

In his 2021 budget proposal, President Donald Trump earmarked $15.4 billion for the new Space Force, which will be a "technology-focused service", according to Raymond.
