February is most risky: According to information received, it has been learned that China's chief medical adviser Jong Nanshan told news agency Reuters about the coronavirus that the number of people affected by the epidemic is decreasing.

This week's christening comes as the coronavirus death toll surpasses 1,000; more than 43,000 cases have been reported in China and overseas.

In Hubei province alone, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, there are about 34,000 people hospitalized, which included approximately 1,400 who are in a critical condition.

The World Health Organisation, WHO has announced that the novel coronavirus will be known as "COVID-19" henceforth, noting that it was careful to find a name without stigma. The "CO" is for coronavirus, the "VI" is for virus, the "D" is because it's a disease and "19" is for the year it was discovered - 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected the official name for the Novel Coronavirus (2019n-COV).

The ICAO chief pointed out that manufacturers, airlines and airports had been taking special precautions to minimize the risk to air travellers of being infected by the virus, and that while ICAO's core role is to help governments to connect the world, in times such as these "the health and safety of the travelling public must be of paramount priority".

"A virus is more powerful in creating political, social and economic upheaval than any terrorist attack", Tedros told reporters in Geneva.

Tedros made the comments at the launch of a two-day scientific conference in Geneva on Tuesday to speed up the development of medications and vaccines for the new coronavirus.

"The first vaccine could be ready in 18 months".

"So, we have to do everything today using the available weapons to fight this virus, while preparing for the long-term", the World Health Organization chief said. Two deaths have been reported outside of China, one in Philippines and one in Hong Kong.

Though the number of infections on Thursday was about 1,800, the lowest daily new infection record, the number of new deaths increased to a staggering 254, which is twice the number of the average daily death toll since January.

The UN health agency on Wednesday cautioned it was "way too early" to say whether COVID-19 might have peaked or when it might end, following a drop in new cases.

Earlier on Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with medical workers and patients affected at a hospital in Beijing, where he called for "more decisive measures" to contain the outbreak, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.

Over 770 people had died worldwide during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak.

COVID-19 is a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person to person.

The deadly virus has spread to more than 25 countries.
