In response to the outbreak at Rencheng Prison, the standing committee of Shandong's provincial government chose to remove eight officials from their positions, including Xie Weijun, who was party secretary of both Shandong's prisons bureau and the province's justice department, and Liu Yishan, who was both the party secretary and the prison chief of Rencheng, China's state-run media People's Net reported on Friday.

Health authorities said they received reports of 889 new cases on Thursday, up from Wednesday's 394, bringing the tally in mainland China to 75,465.

The ship is one of the biggest clusters for confirmed cases of the virus outside mainland China after 634 passengers were diagnosed with the disease during the quarantine.

Chinese officials have said that more than half of the patients are being treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine in Wuhan that helped many of them to recover.

"Although the total number of cases outside China remains relatively small, we're concerned about the number of cases with no clear epidemiological link, such as travel history to China or contact with a confirmed case", WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said.

"We are following this virus 24/7, around the clock", Tedros said.

Many of the South Korean cases are centered in Daegu, the country's fourth-largest city.

In South Korea, officials on Thursday said the number of cases had doubled in a 24-hour period.

The two cases in Australia will fuel questions about Tokyo's policy of allowing former Diamond Princess passengers to return home after testing negative.

The peninsular country trails China, where authorities reported over 74,000 cases as of Thursday, and a cruise ship anchored off Japan, where over 600 tested positive for the disease.

The spike in cases in two jails outside Hubei - in the northern province of Shandong and Zhejiang in the east - made up most of the 258 newly confirmed Chinese infections outside the epicentre province. It said this had led "many to fear a potential explosion of infection numbers in the capital".

Hundreds of helmeted police, police vans and an armoured personnel carrier were dispatched to keep order as the town waited for the evacuees to arrive.

Americans evacuated from China also faced discrimination.

The governor of the women's prison had been dismissed for failing to control the spread of the virus, the paper said.
