Willie Nelson's Longtime Drummer Paul English Dies at 87

Paul English, Willie Nelson's longtime drummer, is dead, the singer's publicist confirmed to Fox News. He had, however, sat out some shows in the weeks leading up to his death: For a couple of shows in January 2020, English handed over drumming duties to none other than rock band Green Day's Tré Cool.

A beloved member of Nelson's road family since the '60s, English first played a show with the country legend in 1955 before becoming his full-time drummer in 1966.

His person of "The Devil" had more than a little truth to it: Per Rolling Stone, he liked to dress all in black, donning a signature satin cape that is now on view in the Country Music's Hall of Fame's Outlaws & Armadillos: Country's Roaring '70s exhibit. Rolling Stone said that English wasn't only his drummer, but he was also his enforcer and "de facto bodyguard". Nelson also immortalized their friendship in a song from Yesterday's Wine in 1971 titled "Me & Paul", which documents their various scrapes with authority over the years.

In addition to Nelson writing "Me and Paul", he also wrote "Devil in a Sleepin' Bag" about English for 1973's Shotgun Willie album.

United Nations issues report on firms active in illegal West Bank settlements
Though Palestinians and much of the world view the settlements as illegal under worldwide law, the USA and Israel dispute this. The report was issued on the eve of the UN Human Rights Council's main annual session, opening in Geneva from February 24.

Nelson's daughter, Amy Nelson, tells Austin 360 that English died at a hospital near his Dallas home after a bout with pneumonia.

Several posts at a Facebook page dedicated to Paul English mourn his passing.
