As the news of the attack first broke on Wednesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed tweeted that the Taliban were not involved.

India also expressed its condolences to the Sikh community of Afghanistan.

Afghan security forces killed all three terrorists in a day-long gun-battle after which North Atlantic Treaty Organisation soldiers helped with the clearance operation.

Sikhs, a small religious minority in Afghanistan that numbers fewer than 300 families, have been targeted by Islamist militants before.

Sources said Afghan security forces were engaged in a gun battle with terrorists who stormed Gurudwara in the Shorbazar area Wednesday morning.

However, Indian intelligence agencies believe that the attack is orchestrated by Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI and the country is promoting the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) as a check on the Taliban.

The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack via the online Amaq news agency, which it uses to distribute statements.

After the attack, ISIL claimed to have killed and injured 150 people, according to the group's Amaq website.

Some 150 people were inside and a number of them have been rescued. Wednesday's slaughter was the second Isis attack on a religious minority this month; a gathering of the predominantly Shia Hazara ethnic minority was also attacked earlier in March, with more than 30 people killed.

People switched off their phones and tried to hide when the attack began, she said.

War-torn Afghanistan is now mired in a political stalemate with two politicians, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, both claiming victory in the presidential election.

In July 2018, IS said it had bombed a gathering of Sikhs and Hindus in the eastern city of Jalalabad, killing 19 people and injuring 20.
