Gassama - christened "Spider-Man" on French social media - has emerged as an overnight celebrity after rescuing the child Saturday night, at a moment when life is becoming increasingly hard for immigrants in France. "It is only right that the nation be grateful", Macron told the 22-year-old, adding that his immigration status would be "put in order". Mamoudou Gassama living illegally in France is being honored by Macron for scaling an apartment building over the weekend to save a 4-year-old child dangling from a fifth-floor balcony.

Speaking to media, the shy Malian said little, only that he had enjoyed his visit and seen some things which interested him.

Gassama has even been invited to the Elysee presidential palace to meet with President Emmanuel Macron on Monday morning, an official at Macron's office said.

She referred to him as the "Spiderman of the 18th", referring to the Paris district where the rescue took place.

The father was later held for questioning by police for having left his child unattended and was due in court later, a judicial source said. He promised the man French citizenship and was offered a job, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent. His father was arrested and then detained following the incident on suspicion of not fulfilling his parental responsibility.

Gassama explained that he was walking past the apartment building when he saw a crowd in front of the building.

Gassama's actions have impressed many of Paris's citizens, including President Macron. The family of the boy has also thanked Mr. Gassama, with the grandmother telling local media that he is truly a hero.

By the time firefighters arrived, the 4-year-old was safe.

Interestingly, Gassama has won an admirer in form of Paris Mayor herself.

"Luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child", a fire service spokesman told AFP.

Tracked down by reporters 24 hours after the heroic rescue, the Malian man said he had acted without thinking.

Reacting to his awards he said later: "I'm pleased because it's the first time I've received a trophy like that".
