The last time she had appeared in a grand slam tournament was at the Australian Open in 2017, when she won it while pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia.

Bidding to win her fourth Roland Garros singles title, which would see her join Justine Henin and Helen Wills Moody in fourth place on the all-time titles leaderboard (after Evert-7; Graf-6; Court-5), Serena will take on No.17 seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round as she seeks a fourth Roland Garros crown, having triumphed here in 2002, 2013 and 2015.

Williams, the victor of an Open era record 23 Grand Slam titles, had arrived at Roland Garros with just four matches under her belt in 2018.

Dressed in a figure-hugging black outfit with a pink band around her waist, the 36 year-old American, saw off world No 70 Kristyna Pliskova 7-6, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes.

"I don't know how many aces there were", Serena smiled courtside after the match.

After a 90-minute rain interruption at 5-5 in the first set Muguruza, the 2016 victor, blew 2009 champion Kuznetsova away in the tie break and went on to win 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.

Czech Krystina Pliskova was no match for Serena Williams.
